Mother Knows Best

What is there to say about Moms that hasn’t already been said? Cheesy poems, Hallmark cards, preacher sermons, even silly kid songs have given their input on what it is to be a mom. Honestly, I’m not sure there is anything new to say about being a mom; but here I go.

Motherhood: in a word, difficult. Full of children who refuse to listen and do as you ask. Children who, as you are trying to get out the door, have on coats, socks, hats, everything except shoes. The shoes you told them to put on first and already reminded them 4 times to add to their feet. Children who test you in public where you already feel an increased pressure not to yell or look angry so society wont label you “a bad mom”. Teenagers who give you mostly attitude and resistance because they don’t want to be treated like kids yet seem to have no intention in growing up.

Motherhood is also exhausting. Staying up all night long feeding them as infants. The long nights of sick children who need mom nearby to feel safe enough to sleep. The early mornings getting them ready for school and out the door on time. Or if you’re homeschooling, the long days figuring out how to explain what tracing is and how to blend letter sounds. The frustration felt as the feeling of inadequacy begins to set in. The constant comparison to other moms and what every professional tells you to be.

Motherhood can seem like a lot of negative all of the time. Something else Motherhood is: rewarding. The snuggles received when they are young. The first time they say “I love you”. As they get bigger and put into practice all you have taught them. The first time they break free of you because they know that with you behind them they can do anything. The day they start to make their own family and really understand all you have given them.

To be a mother is the hardest job there will ever be. It will never be a part time job or a job you can quit. Being a mom will give you more than can ever be expected. A God given gift designed to be given back to Him.
